BeVolunteer Wiki:Community Portal

From BeVolunteer Wiki

Jump to: navigation, search

This page is outdated or irrelevant and will be archived soon.

This is a space where you can ask general questions about or related to the BeVolunteer Wiki. It's better to use individual talk pages (e.g. Talk:Main Page, or User talk:Guaka), but use this space if you don't know any better spot. You can also try the BV Wiki part of the forum if you prefer.

Layout changes?

People have been asking me what I did to the layout. But all the changes I make are visible on this wiki, and this was not part of that. Nor was it visible on Special:Recentchanges. So someone with access to the server has been changing the layout. It would be good to somehow inform others of changes - especially since only people with maintenance access to the server can see what exactly is going on.

Also, it's probably possible to add the wiki|forum|flyspray|tickte system|bewelcome somewhere inside the MediaWiki system. That would be a much more elegant solution.

So now I would like to know who? what? why? and how? :) guakaBW, wikitalk 12:32, 7 August 2007 (CEST)

Micha (username: lupochen) has been making these layout changes to the Wiki, the forum, etc. The idea is to integrate look & feel, a good idea IMHO. --Tgoorden 13:12, 7 August 2007 (CEST)
Ok, cool!
Maybe there is a way to do it from within the MediaWiki messages. That would be more convenient - especially when we want to upgrade to a newer version of MediaWiki. Or set up another installation of MediaWiki. guakaBW, wikitalk 13:37, 7 August 2007 (CEST)
It looks kind of nice now. :) guakaBW, wikitalk 13:43, 7 August 2007 (CEST)
Hey guys, sorry that I didn't warn anyone. I figured out how to change the wiki's look and feel some time ago but couldn't find anyone able to upload my changes. Finally Hannu helped me out. I would also go for making the links on top editable from the wiki but I think it's not that easy. If somebody wants to work on that, please contact me. Lupochen

Bevolunteerswiki?

What is the point of having this page linked to from the main navigation? Why is it called community portal? Why is it called Bevolunteerswiki? The organisation is called BeVolunteer, not BeVolunteers. Why put wiki in there? Who would understand that? For most of the volunteers this is a work or documentation platform, Bevolunteerswiki might not tell them so much ;) Kiwiflave 16:06, 7 August 2007 (CEST)

This is some MediaWiki thing. "Bevolunteerswiki" is a string in LocalSettings.php. Someone with the right credentials should change it into "BeVolunteer Wiki", or something else. I don't know what though, but that's another issue. If you link to e.g. project:About it will actually link to Bevolunteerswiki:About (until you change that string in LocalSettings.php of course).
About linking here from the main navigation: it is the place where you can ask questions like you asked :) Where else would you have asked them, besides the forum -- which is further away, and which makes it harder to move stuff to the right place. If you would have e.g. asked something about the Main Page I would move the question to Talk:Main Page. By default all MediaWiki installs come with a link to this page. There's a reason for that :) guakaBW, wikitalk 18:26, 7 August 2007 (CEST)
Well, but those "default installs" of MediaWiki assume that the community is built around the wiki, while here the wiki is just one tool of many. Doesn't mean this page has no reason to exist, but the easy argument of "every mediawiki has it" does not work. Or... whatever, I don't really care that much, to be honest :) --lemon-head 01:43, 12 April 2008 (UTC)
