Problems and barriers

  • slow or limited internet connections
  • cultural issues:
    • messages trying to establish contact are often considered almost spam in western countries
  • language as a barrier: English as the internet language
    • <-> BeWelcome has translatable profiles

incentives / benefits for people from other cultures

  • hospitality is often a natural and genuine feature in many cultures
  • foreign visitors are often considered a status symbol
  • against general assumptions that 'poor people have other things to worry about than hospitality exchange' please read: http://www.betraveler.org/index.php/hospitality-of-the-poor

Solutions

  • going out to ‘them’, approaching them in person
  • approaching international organizations like Oxfam who are there already
    • they can establish connections with their networks
  • use local portals
  • we need local volunteers to feed in information of how to
  • get in touch with local publishers
    • journalists’ network in China: www.zonaeuropa.com
  • get in touch with expat communities to get more local info
  • upload a video to you-tube
  • create press material
  • approach universities (there you can find mediators)
