My name is Robin(o). I have been a participant (mainly as a host) in hospitality exchange networks since summer 2006. I have been aware of issues concerning hospitality club and decided to skip HC but to use Couchsurfing instead. I became a member during its Crash in summer 2006 and was really excited about the momentum that came out of it as a result. There was this idea of making the network open, transparent and participatory. But from one day (mainly during the New Zealand Collective) onwards volunteers that wanted to go make CS really participatory, open and transparant were one by one 'diplomatically' forced to leave.

My vision

Hospitality club is a dictatorship or one-person company. Couchsurfing is an oligarch/ a form of Plato's vision on how to govern the people, or a small company. Bewelcome though is the first project that actually could go all the way in terms of grassroots democracy. It has the potential, it is heading into a really good direction and it is able to empower people.

Issues that I find important:

  • transparency, democracy & empowerment;
  • Easy ways for volunteers to take part;
  • Member-driven forms of organisations;
  • A spokescouncil type of organisation.

My work for BeWelcome

See for the things that I work on/ want to work on in my wikitalk and feel free to comment.

I participate in BeVolunteer/ BeWelcome in different ways. I believe in a creative action and open space for people to do what they are good at. Things that I am good at: writing, envisioning, structuring. I will be signing up today in Essen at the second General Assembly to become a member of Bevolunteer (still have to do this!) and I will be taking an active part when I see that I can add new potential.
